What do Block Leaders do?

Block Leaders choose the size of their "block," which can include only the homes on their street, homes on neighboring streets, or homes within their subdivision. The information they provide to their neighbors helps residents make informed choices about conservation. Block Leaders do not solicit anything from their neighbors, nor do they monitor their neighbors’ water use. They simply are grassroots communicators who distribute conservation information and materials, and serve as resources for their neighbors.

How does the City support their Block Leaders?

Block Leaders work directly with City of Allen Water Conservation staff. The City provides informative pamphlets and materials, along with contact information should neighbors have more questions. Each year Block Leaders pick up this information packet at one of the training sessions held throughout the spring and early summer.

Block Leader Responsibilities:

At their earliest convenience, Block Leaders deliver these packets to neighbors within their block. Some volunteers leave the information at the doorstep, some personally hand it to their neighbors, and others make it available at neighborhood gatherings. City staff keep Block Leaders informed of relevant developments and pertinent issues throughout the year via e-mail and a quarterly newsletter.

Block Leaders are a network of residents dedicated to environmental education, not members of a water police force.

What opportunities are available to Block Leaders?

In appreciation for volunteering their time, Block Leaders are welcome to attend the Sustainable Landscape seminar series at no charge. These seminars, conducted by City staff and local experts, cover a variety of topics and are opportunities for fun and camaraderie.
